I Want an iPod (Who Doesn’t?)

iPodI’ve always seen the iPod as a cool little device, but always saw it as a little overpriced. More and more however, I’ve seen how good the iPod actually is, how well designed it is, and have myself thinking on several occasions: “it’s not that bad.”

Then I bought an iPod mini for my wife for her birthday… as soon as I saw the packaging it came in, I was impressed! It’s that attention to detail that sets Apple apart.

Maybe it’s because I work with someone who’s always up on the latest Apple news, or maybe it’s just because I have Apple envy, but now I want my own iPod, as well as several other Apple products. It’s not just because the iPod is the “popular choice”, but I feel that it is superior to other portable music players.

In my opinion, Apple designs some of the best looking (and functioning) products in the world, and I wish other companies would have the same attention to detail as Apple. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not plugging Apple because I’m trying to get the entire world to switch. I myself am a PC user and understand the benefits of both platforms. I have never felt a need to switch to a Mac… Until recently.

With OSX, Apple has bridged the gap between PC users and Mac users - while there are still benefits of using both platforms - it’s quite clear to anyone who’s ever used OSX that it is a FAR superior operating system chalk full of nifty features that make using it a joy. Because I’m a web developer, I don’t need a PC for any specific reason, and with OSX running on a UNIX based system - I’m beginning to think that I might be better off running a Mac anyways.

And with Apple switching to Intel processors in the next year, the gap is closing quicker than ever.

I am certain that my next computer will be a Mac. Whether it’s for home or business use, I’m already on board.

Anyways, now that I’m way off topic… I know I’m not alone in my impression of Apple. A recent report came out that stated that 30 million adults (not sure if that’s just in the US or in the North America) are planning to buy an iPod in the next 12 months. I am one of them.

I’m not sure if it’s just brilliant marketing, or if I’ve just seen the value of the iPod (+ iTunes, which is a whole other topic - great piece of software!), but I’ve gone from thinking the iPod was cool, but overpriced, to wanting one regardless of the price. From thinking that it would be cool, but I don’t need one, to justifying why I do need one.
