Heading for the Polls!

Well, I wasn’t exactly planning this, but it turned out pretty well. Canadians are headed for the election polls on January 23rd. Today, Prime Minister Paul Martin’s Liberal minority government was finally defeated by a non-confidence motion, effectively ending his current term as PM.

Reinspire.net is also heading for the polls, but I’m talking about a completely different type of poll. I’ve been hard at work on a polling system for this website that I’m happy to unveil today. As I said, I wasn’t really planning this to coincide with the election call, but so be it.

In honour of the newly hatched election race, I’ll use the opportunity to display the first poll on this site. And just to stay on theme, the poll will be ‘Who will be the next Prime Minister of Canada?’ (Feel free to answer if you’re not Canadian).

About the Poll

Example Poll GraphThe poll itself is driven by PHP, MySQL, CSS and AJAX (JavaScript). At some point in the near future I will be releasing the code behind the poll in a later post. It’ll be a great tutorial for those who have yet to jump onto the AJAX scripting bandwagon.

As always, any comments and/or suggestions are welcome. You can use the comments section below, or the contact form on this site.

Let the voting/election race begin!

p.s. If you’re a Canadian and are a little upset about the timing of the election, take a look at this post on Global National anchor Kevin Newman’s blog. He offers a little bit of perspective on the issue.

p.p.s. If you’re a Canadian, get out and exercise your right to vote! Get informed: Bloc Québécois | Conservative Party of Canada | Green Party of Canada | Liberal Party of Canada | New Democratic Party

Poll ResultsUPDATE: Well, the polls have closed here in Canada and we now have a new Prime Minister, Stephen Harper. In the interest of exemplary purposes, I’ll be leaving this poll open for voting. Feel free to continue to cast your votes and check back to see current results. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, visitors at reinspire.net did in fact correctly predict the winner of this election.
