Gatorade’s Monopoly

You may remember a while back that I wrote about Reebok’s Monopoly on the North American professional sports apparel world. Yesterday, PepsiCo (Gatorade, Aquafina, Lay’s) announced that they had reached an agreement with the NHL and the NHL Player’s Association to be the official ‘beverage, sports beverage, bottled water and snack’ provider for the NHL.
Just as I stated when I wrote about Reebok’s deal, ‘monopoly’ is a bit of a strong word, but I as far as I know this latest move now makes Gatorade the official sports beverage of the NFL, NBA, MLB, CFL and now the NHL. PepsiCo has to be pretty pleased that the Gatorade brand will be front and centre year round, now that they have a stranglehold on the sports beverage market in all of the major professional sports leagues in North America.
