New Beginnings

Last month I posted a rather vague sentence about how I’d been making some difficult decisions lately. At the time I didn’t want to dive into too much detail, but now that the dust has settled I think it’s time I let the cat out of the bag.
After just under 2 (incredible) years, I’ve decided it’s time for me to move on from my job at Barking Dog Studios. I can honestly say that I’m leaving with mixed emotions because part of me is sad to leave such a great team, but another part of me is really excited about what the future has in store. Over the past 2 years I’ve learned so much and had so many great opportunities, and for that I’m truly thankful
So what about the future?
Glad you asked! Starting on Monday, August 27th, I will be working as a “User Interface Engineer” at Blue Coat Systems, in their Waterloo, Ontario office. I’m really excited about what this opportunity has in store, and I can’t wait to get started. One nice plus is that the office is a lot closer to home than the BDS office was, so my daily commute will be less than half of the distance/time that the old job required.
Blue Coat is in the network security business, so on the surface it may look like I’m getting away from web development, but I can assure you that that’s not the case. I’ll be working in software development on web applications and my initial role is essentially that of a Front-End Developer (XHTML, CSS, JavaScript, etc.) with a pretty heavy emphasis on the JavaScript side of things. I’m very excited about joining Blue Coat and I’m really looking forward to the challenges this new position will bring. Also, I’m secretly hoping that for some reason I’ll need to take a business trip to Blue Coat’s head office… in Sunnyvale, California.
Oh, and did I happen to mention that the Green Bay Packers are one of Blue Coat’s clients!?

Thanks guys! The first week went pretty well for the most part. Unfortunately it ended on a bit of a sour note, but all in all, a pretty decent first week.
