Note: Predictions for week 10 of the 2008 NFL season can be found here: NFL Week 10 Predictions.
With week 10 of the NFL season upon us, now is a fitting time for some reflection and at this point in the year I like to start taking some polls to find out how people have seen things. Each team has played at least half of their schedule and has given us a fairly good idea of where they stand. Yes, there are still a lot of downs left to be played and some teams will have opportunities to turn it around, but now is as good a time as any to start discussing opinions.
This week’s post will be a bit different than most. I’ll still be picking the games, but rather than analyze each game this week, I’ll basically provide a 1 or 2 sentence (or in some cases, 1 or 2 word) assessment of where I think each team is at this year. Also, this week’s poll will focus on the negative (positive coming next week)… I’d like to know which team you think has been the most disappointing this season, so cast your votes! Voting is now closed. Thanks to everyone who voted and made their opinion known!
Last week’s picks didn’t fair as well as I had hoped. I took some risks and wound up going 9-5, but that’s kind of what happens when you hang out on the limb.
Game of the Week: Cowboys at Giants
After losing their first 2 games of the season, not many people (including myself) would have predicted that the New York Football Giants would go on to win their next 6 in a row and head into the bye week with a 6-2 record, but that’s exactly what happened. The Cowboys meanwhile have jumped out to a 7-1 start and are in the driver’s seat in the NFC East. With the Giants impressive winning streak though, the Cowboys probably feel like the Giants are in the back seat of their 3 seater coupe… it’s a little tight.
Game 1 between these two teams was the season opener in Dallas, with the Cowboys beating the Giants in a 45-35 shootout. I don’t think we’ll see as many points as the Giants defense has gotten better as this season has run along, but I also don’t see Dallas’s defense allowing 35 either. I think this game will be a close one, and another great Sunday Night match to watch.
Here are my picks for week 10!
| Away | Home | Comments | Pick | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Rams(1-8) | Saints (4-5) | Rams: Hopefully they went bowling as a team during their bye week… that way at least someone was bound to experience a victory. Saints: Back to form? | ![]() | ![]() |
Bills(5-4) | Dolphins(0-9) | Bills: Improved, QB controversy. Dolphins: See Rams above. | ![]() | ![]() |
Jaguars(6-3) | Titans(6-3) | Jaguars: Stayin’ alive despite their QB injury issues. Titans: The Titans are the new Ravens. Great defense, barely enough offense to get them by. | ![]() | ![]() |
Browns(5-4) | Steelers(7-2) | Browns: Surprising! Anderson is making a few people wonder why Cleveland gave away so much to get Brady Quinn. Steelers: New coach, no problem. | ![]() | ![]() |
Eagles(4-5) | Redskins(5-4) | Eagles: Too many distractions? Redskins: Improving, but maybe still a year or 2 away from doing major damage. | ![]() | ![]() |
Falcons(3-6) | Panthers(4-5) | Falcons: Season was over before it started really. Panthers: Injury bug(s). | ![]() | ![]() |
Broncos(4-5) | Chiefs(4-5) | Broncos: Mediocre. Chiefs: Tough D, staying competitive. | ![]() | ![]() |
Vikings(3-6) | Packers(8-1) | Vikings: Adrian Peterson is carrying this team. Packers: Exciting! Favre for MVP? | ![]() | ![]() |
Bengals(3-6) | Ravens(4-5) | Bengals: So much talent being wasted away. Ravens: Washed up? | ![]() | ![]() |
Lions(6-3) | Cardinals(4-5) | Lions: Unexpected. Cardinals: New coach + injuries = same results. | ![]() | ![]() |
Bears(4-5) | Raiders(2-7) | Bears: Super Bowl slump. Raiders: What to say… | ![]() | ![]() |
Cowboys(8-1) | Giants(6-3) | Cowboys: New coach, changed attitude, restored pride. Giants: Eli Manning has really stepped up this year. | ![]() | ![]() |
Colts(7-2) | Chargers(5-4) | Colts: 1 tough loss, better team than last year’s Super Bowl winners. Chargers: New coaching staff, underachieving players. | ![]() | ![]() |
49ers(2-7) | Seahawks(5-4) | 49ers: Still searching. Seahawks: Inconsistent. | ![]() | ![]() |
| Note: the Buccaneers (5-4), Jets (1-8), Patriots (9-0) and Texans (4-5) have a bye week this week. | ||||
For the teams on a bye week:
Buccaneers: Average.
Jets: Spygate initiators.
Patriots: Only question is whether they’ll be beaten or not.
Texans: Same old.
This week’s ESPN Expert Picks.
Update: Wow… there were a bunch of crazy games this week and my picks didn’t fair so well. 6-8 this week to bring my total up to 96-48. See you Tuesday for Week 11 picks! (which will hopefully be a lot more accurate than these!)

I like the poll. I wish it would sort by top %, but what can you do.

Hmm… thanks for the suggestion Doc! I’m actually in the middle of doing a complete redesign of the site, so maybe I’ll implement that feature while I’m at it. It’s a good idea and one that I’ve thought about before… but it never really went anywhere.

Love this site, only wish it commented on whether or not a team would beat the spread when a favorite is picked to win.

Hmm… Maybe I should not have been so quick to nit-pick, it was just the first thing that caught my eye as I voted. After I clicked around a bit I noticed this site is really well designed. Nice job man.

Atlanta, Broncos, Raiders, opposite your picks.
Du du du du du du…

@MIKE C: Thanks Mike, this is something that I’ve thought about doing in the past, but I honestly don’t pay too much attention to the spreads because I’m not a betting man. Having said that, it would still be interesting to pick against them from time to time, perhaps something I’ll add in the future.
@Doc: Thanks Doc!
