The End of an Era

Brett Favre Today my favourite football player, nay, my favourite professional athlete of all time decided to call it a career after an amazing 17-year run in the NFL. Brett Favre has retired.

Like most Packers fans, the news came as a bit of a shock to me this morning, and even though we all knew it was going to happen eventually, I didn’t think that after the season that just passed that we’d be saying goodbye yet.

Super Bowl Prediction

NFL logo I’m really going to shock some with my prediction for Super Bowl winner… but I’m going to go with…

The New England Patriots.

Shocking, I know, but now that the Packers are gone, I have to stick with my week one prediction (and the majority of those who responded in my week 1 poll) and pick the Patriots to cap off their perfect season in super fashion.

NFL Conference Championship Predictions

NFL logo This week has been pretty busy, so I’m going to keep it really short in the interests of actually getting this posted. Last week was a whole lot of fun for Packers fans to watch, and it’s exciting to see the transformation that’s taken place in Green Bay over the past year.

NFL Divisional Predictions

NFL logo Last week’s Wild Card weekend wasn’t actually as exciting as I thought it would be. Sure, the Jaguars/Steelers match was a lot of fun to watch, but that was really the only game that kept my full attention from start to finish. Congratulations to Eli Manning for winning his first playoff game and the San Diego Chargers, for winning their first one in long time as well.

NFL Wild Card Predictions

NFL logo Happy New Year! Today I decided to go back over each week of picks to check and make sure that I had been adding things up correctly. What I found out is that I had actually been tallying my total incorrectly since week 12, showing an extra 4 games in the loss column and bumping the total amount of games played out of whack (which is what prompted me to check my numbers in the first place).

NFL Week 17 Predictions

NFL logo Last week’s 11-5 record brought my season total up to 163-77 heading into the final week of the regular season. It’s not a bad percentage (.679), but I was hoping to fair a little better this year.

It’s been a pretty busy week for me with the Christmas holidays, so my apologies for the late entry. With that in mind, I will again try and keep this week’s post a little shorter so I can get my picks up as soon as possible. There are really just 2 or 3 things that I’d like to touch on, so I’ll dive right in.

NFL Week 16 Predictions

NFL logo Last week’s picks generated a ho-hum 10-6 week, but it wasn’t without it’s surprises. Seattle basically cemented their “pretender” status in losing to the Panthers and with the talent on the Bengals and Ravens, they just shouldn’t be losing to the 49ers and Dolphins respectively.

NFL Week 15 Predictions

Note: Predictions for week 15 of the 2008 NFL season can be found here: NFL Week 15 Predictions.

NFL logo Last week was another good one as I made 13 correct picks to bring my record up to 142-66. This week we should see a lot of teams that are “on the bubble” have their hopes burst. Hey, with only 3 games left in the season, someone’s gotta lose.

NFL Week 14 Predictions

Note: Predictions for week 14 of the 2008 NFL season can be found here: NFL Week 14 Predictions.

NFL logo Last week I away on a great vacation in Mexico and enjoyed a fairly decent 10-6 record for my week 13 picks. That especially holds true when you consider the fact that I actually picked most of the games in advance of week 12’s games actually playing out.

NFL logo Well, if all goes as planned, this post will go live at 9:00 AM on Tuesday, November 27th, but I’ll let you in on a little secret – I wrote this last week after the Thanksgiving day games. This week I’m on vacation and can’t guarantee that I’ll be near a computer, so I figured I’d write this ahead of time and let my site work its magic.

NFL Week 12 Predictions

Note: Predictions for week 12 of the 2008 NFL season can be found here: NFL Week 12 Predictions.

NFL logo There, that was much better! Last week I ended up going 13-3, which was a vast improvement over the week before. Most of the teams that should have won actually won their games, with the exception of the Steelers who lost to the 1-8 Jets. Yeah… ouch.

NFL Week 11 Predictions

Note: Predictions for week 11 of the 2008 NFL season can be found here: NFL Week 11 Predictions.

NFL logo Wow, last week was just nuts! It seems like there are a lot of anemic offenses in the NFL this season. San Francisco, Miami, Oakland, Minnesota, Baltimore and Tennessee to name a few. Last week was a perfect illustration culminated by a horrible performance by the 49ers on Monday Night Football.

NFL Week 10 Predictions

Note: Predictions for week 10 of the 2008 NFL season can be found here: NFL Week 10 Predictions.

NFL logo With week 10 of the NFL season upon us, now is a fitting time for some reflection and at this point in the year I like to start taking some polls to find out how people have seen things. Each team has played at least half of their schedule and has given us a fairly good idea of where they stand. Yes, there are still a lot of downs left to be played and some teams will have opportunities to turn it around, but now is as good a time as any to start discussing opinions.

NFL Week 9 Predictions

NFL logo I’m still pumped up about the Packers win last night! Their 6-1 start this season has been so exciting to watch as a Packers fan, and most NFL fans in general will agree that it’s really nice to see Brett Favre having success this season. I’m so glad that he stuck around to play again this year, because there isn’t one person in the NFL that’s more fun to watch than Brett.

NFL Week 8 Predictions

NFL logo Alright, so week 8 brings us another 13-game schedule and I’m hoping I’ll do better than the last 13-game week where I went 8-5. Last week I did pretty well though with 11 correct picks, so hopefully I’ll be able to keep that trend going.

NFL Week 5 Predictions

NFL logo In every NFL season there always seems to be one or two weeks during the year that just make you scratch your head. Last week was one of those weeks. I was only able to make par by going 7-7 with my picks to bring my total to 40-22.

NFL Week 3 Predictions

Note: Predictions for week 3 of the 2008 NFL season can be found here: NFL Week 3 Predictions.

NFL logo After starting strong in week 1, I had hoped to fair a little better than the 10-6 record I posted last week, but in my defense, there were a lot of surprises in week 2. This week will probably be no different because the schedule has a lot of games on it that I’m really unsure about. On paper, it’s just a breeding ground for surprising finishes.

NFL Week 2 Predictions

Note: Predictions for week 2 of the 2008 NFL season can be found here: NFL Week 2 Predictions.

NFL logo Last week I got off to a really good start by going 12-4 with my picks for week 1, and what an exciting weekend it was! As always during the first few weeks of an NFL season, there were a few surprises, but the story of week 1 was injuries. It’s extremely tragic what happened to Buffalo’s Kevin Everett and I really hope for the best. So far things are looking up, so let’s hope that they continue to improve.

Note: Predictions for week 1 of the 2008 NFL season can be found here: Are you ready for some football?.

NFL logo It’s finally here! Well, it’s been one long wait since Peyton Manning and the Colts were victorious in Super Bowl XLI and February seems like it was a very long time ago. I’m excited about this season, I’m sick of watching baseball and I’m back with my weekly picks on all the action in the NFL.

July Randomness

It’s been far too long since my last post, and for that I’m sorry. I can’t get into too many details right now about why it’s been so quiet around here lately but I will say that I’ve had to make some difficult decisions over the past few months. Those decisions have been both mentally and physically draining, and that’s pretty much why I haven’t spent too much free time online in the past couple of months.

Anyways, the reason for this post is partly because I feel a little guilty that I haven’t been posting regularly lately, and partly becasue I just can’t allow my site to go an entire calendar month without at least one post :). So, I thought I’d post a few quicker thoughts that have been rolling around in my brain for the past few weeks. Hopefully they’re usefull to someone and maybe we can start a conversation over one or all of them. Anyways, here goes…

Networks Pull Frank Thomas Blue Jays Ad

Can someone please tell me exactly what is wrong with this commercial?

This ad, featuring Frank Thomas (the new designated hitter for Major League Baseball’s Toronto Blue Jays), is one in a series of ads promoting the 2007 baseball season. This is the 2nd or 3rd year that ads like this have been produced to promote the Toronto Blue Jays. Some of them are funny, some of them are just plain dumb, but this one in particular is pretty good I think. Never though (at least to my knowledge) have the ads been a source of controversy… until now.

Super Bowl Prediction(s)

NFL logo Wow, does anyone else feel like it’s been an awfully long two weeks? Everything that the Colts and Bears have worked for this season all comes down to this. Sunday in Miami, the Colts and Bears will face off in Super Bowl XLI in what is bound to be the potential defining moment in Peyton Manning’s career.

First, I’d like to get a few things off my chest. Over the past several weeks I’ve read and heard various sports writers talk about Manning not being able to win the “big one” and how he’s a choke artist in the playoffs. To me, Manning shed that title after leading his team to a comeback victory over the Patriots in the AFC Championship game 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately for Manning, if he doesn’t win XLI this Sunday, none of that will matter and that gorilla that was on his back before that spectacular AFC Championship game will hop right back on according to most of the sports media.

NFL Conference Championship Predictions

NFL logo Last week’s divisional matches were as good as they come. All 4 games were both exciting and entertaining… and I picked 3 of the 4 correctly! I should’ve known not to pick against the Patriots in the post-season though. I wonder if I’ll learn my lesson…

NFL Divisional Predictions

NFL logo As I’m writing this I’m watching the BCS Championship match-up between Ohio State and Florida and so far it’s been more exciting than 3 of the Wild Card games were this past weekend. Even though it wasn’t nearly as exciting as it could have been, last week I ended up picking the games a perfect 4-0 to start the playoffs.

NFL Wild Card Predictions

NFL logo Welcome to the New Year and its new beginnings! There are now 12 teams that are in the hunt for the NFL’s ultimate prize, and this weekend 4 of them will drop out of the running. Nothing that the teams have done up to this point really matters anymore, except for the momentum (or lack thereof) they have going into the “second season.”

NFL Week 17 Predictions

NFL logo Wow, what a crazy season! If there’s one word to sum up the 2006-2007 regular season it would have to be this: unpredictable. At the beginning of the year, many teams were picked to be legitimate contenders, but most of those teams have fallen off the radar. Take the Dolphins and the Panthers for example - Miami is out and Carolina barely has a chance to even make the playoffs, let alone contend.

NFL Week 16 Predictions

NFL logo With only 2 weeks left in the regular season, there are still a lot of questions to be answered. Both conferences (the AFC and the NFC) have extremely muddy playoff pictures heading into this holiday weekend, and it doesn’t look like much will be decided by this week’s games.

NFL Week 15 Predictions

Note: Predictions for week 15 of the 2008 NFL season can be found here: NFL Week 15 Predictions.

NFL logo History was made during week 14 of the 2006 season when LaDainian Tomlinson scored his 29th total touchdown, a new NFL record. It’s exciting to watch this kind of thing take place, and even more exciting to see where LT ends up after the next 3 games. 29 touchdowns are impressive, but what’s more impressive is that the previous record (28 by Shaun Alexander in 2005) was beaten in only 13 games.

NFL Week 14 Predictions

Note: Predictions for week 14 of the 2008 NFL season can be found here: NFL Week 14 Predictions.

NFL logo Last week was another average week for my picks - I went 9-7 to bring the total up to 59.9%. There were definitely a few surprises, not the least of which was the Titans beating the Colts with a 60-yard field goal at the end of the game. It was just another example of the “anything-can-happen” season that it’s been all year.

NFL logo After another sub-par week last week (7-9 to bring my running total up to 94-66), I’m really hoping that there are less surprises in the coming weeks of the NFL season. This year has been marked by upsets week after week and good teams failing to beat the teams they should be destroying.

Makin’ it worse: Packers.com redesign

Packers.com Logo Yesterday the Green Bay Packers launched their latest redesign of Packers.com, the official website of the Green Bay Packers franchise. At first I was excited to hear about the redesign, hoping that they would improve upon their 2005 redesign, which was a giant step forward. I’m sad to say however, that the new version of Packers.com is a step backwards in many aspects.

Random Thoughts for August

Some thoughts that ran through my head this month:

  • If anyone has a spare 90 million dollars, I want one of these. I figure the extra 10 million will be enough to pay for fuel and travel expenses for a while ;)
  • NFL opening day is in 10 days. I’m pretty excited about the upcoming season… hopefully the Packers can be a lot more competitive this year. Look for my week 1 prognostications to fly early during the week of September 7th.
  • Speaking of the NFL… ESPN’s super slow motion is awesome for Monday Night Football (or any sport really). If the pre-season is any indication, NBC and ESPN are going to do an excellent job with Sunday and Monday Night Football this year.
  • Tiger Woods is the best golfer ever. I’m sick of hearing people say that he “could be” the best golfer in the history of the sport. Even if Tiger decided today that he’d had enough of the PGA you could still make a case about him being the best. Jack Nicklaus played in a different era on shorter courses. Yes, the technology these days is way better than it was in the Golden Bear’s day, but golfers are also stronger and more athletic than ever before… well, some of them anyways. A couple of stats to back up my claim: Tiger is 3 years ahead of where Jack Nicklaus was when Nicklaus won his 50th PGA tour event. Nicklaus won his 18 majors by a combined 44 shots… Tiger has won his first 12 majors by a combined 56 shots. (Source: ESPN). Now, I never had the privilege to see Nicklaus play but there is currently no one who comes close to competing with Tiger - now, either everyone else on the tour is really bad, or Tiger’s just that good. To me, there’s no argument, I am convinced that we are watching the greatest player in the history of the sport of golf.

In some site related news, Portfolio updates are coming in the near future and probably will be launched sometime in the next couple of weeks. I’ve spent a while re-thinking my portfolio and how I wanted to go about updating it. I think I’ve come up with a pretty good solution, so I’ll be rolling it out soon. Stay tuned.

Gatorade’s Monopoly

Gatorade LogoYou may remember a while back that I wrote about Reebok’s Monopoly on the North American professional sports apparel world. Welcome to May

It’s hard to believe that it’s already May 1st. Even counting the first 4 months of 2005 (in which I was not only enduring my last semester of college, but also preparing for my wedding, searching for apartments and weighing career options), this has been the busiest 4 months in memory by far.

So here’s a run down of what’s been going on in my life lately, and why the posts around here have been few and far between.

February’s Random Thoughts

February turned out to be a much busier month than I was anticipating. Despite being extremely busy though, I did manage to find time to work on the site. For those of you who subscribe to the RSS feed - you’ll notice that I’ve added the Recent Links section of the site to the feed. A lot of the other things that I’ve been working on will be launched soon.

Getting back to February, there were a lot of ideas I had to post about, but never got a chance to actually write them. Plenty of ideas, but not enough time right now. So here’s a few of the things I’ve had on my mind over the past 27 days.

Random Thoughts

Over the past few weeks I’ve had a lot of things running through my brain that I felt like I wanted to share. None of them really constitute a full entry in my mind, so I’ll just post them all at once.

This is something that I know many people do on their sites from time to time and I would imagine that more and more of these entries will show up here in the coming months as well. Wait and see…

Redesign Coming Soon

Well, I said way back when that I had wanted to give this site a facelift, but I didn’t really know when it would happen. I’m happy to say that the redesign is in progress, almost complete and will probably be uploaded this weekend. New site design, new logo, and new posts that actually relate to web development will all be coming in the near future! Check back often.

Superbowl Predictions

NFL logoWell, it all comes down to one. One game that will determine who is remembered and who is forgotten. One game that will cap a successful season for one team and one game that will make all the work seem like a failure for the other. Who those teams will be is a question that’s going to be answered on Sunday, February 5th. For me, I’m looking forward to what should prove to be a great game.

NFL Conference Championship Predictions

NFL logoFirst of all, last week was probably one of the most exciting weekends of football that I’ve seen in a long time. All 4 games were hard fought battles.

Indianapolis. I can’t believe it ended this way. I suppose that makes a bit of a case for teams in the future that clinch everything early… don’t rest your starters. I feel bad for Mike Vanderjagt, who missed the tying field goal opportunity, but let’s get one thing straight; that’s not the only mistake that killed the Colts on Sunday, it was just the final nail.

NFL Divisional Predictions

NFL logoWell, last week was a great week of football. I started my playoff predictions by going 2-2, but I hope to do much better this week.

NFL Wild Card Predictions

NFL logoThe Playoffs are here! It’s been a long season so far, especially for Packers fans, so it’ll be nice to watch some great playoff action this weekend. What’s nice for me is that the Colts (my 2nd favourite team) are the front runners to win the Superbowl.

This week’s wild card match-ups present some very interesting games. Honestly, it’ll be tough to predict every one of them because there aren’t really ‘underdogs’ in any of the matches.

NFL Week 17 Predictions

NFL logoWell, it’s been 16 weeks already, and there’s only one game left for the 20 teams who wont make the playoffs. Who those teams will be is mostly confirmed, except for a few teams that still have a chance.

The Cowboys have a slim chance at making it, but need to win their game and get some help (a loss or tie) from the Redskins. However, the Redskins are one of the few teams that have a “win and you’re in” situation, that I don’t expect they’ll squander. The Panthers and Steelers are the 2 other teams that can make the playoffs with a win this weekend.

Reebok’s Monopoly

Reebok's Rbk logoI’ve been meaning to post something about this for a while now, and maybe the title is a little strong, but the NHL has been back for almost a month now and I’ve noticed several new things about the game, and about it’s marketing. Reebok is all over the place!

NFL Week 2 Predictions

NFL logoWow, what a week it was in week one. So many questions. Are the Dolphins really that good, or are the Broncos really that bad? Is Chad Pennington ever going to be as good as he once was?
